This was my fifth nursery visit. I explored two new
nurseries in my neighbourhood. With the mercury rising up, it became difficult
to go in the second half, so we decided to go in the morning around 8. I have
to confess that plants have incredible hypnotic abilities. When you are with
them, you forget about everything and enjoy the moment. That’s, at least, in my
case.
I will not stray too far from the subject and will get right to the point. The purpose of today’s post is to make my readers aware about few important tips to keep in mind while visiting nurseries.
- Before picking your favourites take a complete overview of the nursery. It should be clean and well kept, also the plants should reflect healthy growth. You must give a good glance to all of the plants in the nursery
- Since we are approaching scorching summer, so ignore buying winter flowering plants such as Geranium, Petunia and Godetia. Undoubtedly, they are blooming profusely and we are tempted to pick a few for our green space. However, their lifetime is brief and they will not be able to withstand the sweltering heat of the coming summers.
- Summer calls for flowers like moss-rose,
jasmine, tuberose, zinnia, sunflower, plumeria and others. So, go for such
plants and make your space full of fragrance and radiance.
- Talking about indoor plants you can look for pothos, caladium, crotons, aglaonema, snake plant and many more.
- Don’t pull all of your confidence in the seller. Listen to him/her patiently and also read few short tips on internet before taking a final call. This way you would not be deceived by anyone.
- Understand the lighting conditions of your space, such as whether your balcony or roof receives morning, evening or full day sunlight. It will help you to invest in plants that can thrive in all four seasons.
- Before buying the plant understand the soil type and water condition of it. Also understand the fertilizer that you have to use for its healthy growth.
- Then understand how the plant, of your choice, respond to light. If they are sun loving like jasmine or hibiscus or they love shade, like peace lilly.
- Check your plants thoroughly. There shouldn’t be
any pest or insect attack on the leaves. The leaves should look bright and
healthy. Avoid plant which has excessive yellow leaves.
- Ensure that the roots of the plants do not extend beyond the bottom surface of the pot.
- Make sure that the plant has few flowers or buds in it. In case of fruit plants, it should bear few fruits.
- If you are purchasing seedlings or cuttings, ensure that you carrying them in small pots or seedling trays.
- If you are growing your plant in the pots then ask for the appropriate pot size.
- If you want to use hanging baskets then ask for
plants, like pothos, which grow well in them.
- Do not repot the plant on the same day of purchase. Let it settle at your location for few days. Sometimes eagerness for repotting can be harmful for the plants.
Have a green summer!!!
